Tracking a tutor’s time spent online

The YSJ work planning model (WPM) was introduced in September 2011. It is a management tool which aims to provide a structure for the allocation of time for an academic’s workload.

Some academics feel that their time spent online is not catered for in the WPM and they would like a way of being able to track their time spent online – specifically in Moodle. Activities such as creating an online course, loading resources, moderating discussions and providing formative and summative feedback are all typical tutor led activities which are conducted within the VLE.

One of the things we need to consider in future upgrades is a tool which collects and reports on the time a tutor is spending online.

Here are a few examples:

Timetrack block – functionality looks good, but it’s a manual entry of data. I think we need to be more intelligent and gather data from the logs.

Attendance register – looks interesting but is primarily designed to track students’ online activity. I am sure with some changes in the code, we could adjust the role tracked to tutor.

Customisable Reports – Rob has been looking at getting our current customisable reports block working in 2.3. I am not sure if it’s the same one as this, but we may be able to use some of this code to allo tutors to run reports on themselves in order to retrieve useful data.

YES! That’s exactly what we need.

Seeing as it’s you, Andrew, we’ll put it to the top of the priority list for developments over the summer.

Hi, I’d be insterested to know what you developped and if it’s available opensource somewhere. Thanks.

      Hi Lena,

Unfortunately we didn’t develop any of the things listed in this post and the staff who were working in our team at the time have since moved on.
