Open Course in Technology Enhanced Learning #ocTEL

octelThe Open Course in Technology Enhanced Learning (#ocTEL) is an online course designed to help you better understand ways to use Learning Technology for teaching, learning and assessment. The course has undergone a revision after last years iteration, and is now shorter (six weeks plus induction week) and incorporates new features including Open Badges for accreditation.

The course is an example of one particular kind of technology-enabled education called a MOOC: a Massive Open Online Course. ocTEL doesn’t follow a traditional course format and, whilst they’d love everyone to complete ‘the course’, you can drop-in for the material and events most useful to you. Ultimately their aim is to help you make connections between people and knowledge to aid your personal development.

  • Week 0: TEL & the future (induction) – 28 Apr 2014
  • Week 1: Concepts and approaches – 5 May 2014
  • Week 2: Learners and learning – 12 May 2014
  • Week 3: Materials, platforms and technologies – 19 May 2014
  • Week 4: Support, feedback and assessment – 2 Jun 2014
  • Week 5: Leadership, management and keeping on track – 9 Jun 2014
  • Week 6: Enhancement, review and evaluation – 16 Jun 2014

The course is being organised by the Association for Learning Technology (ALT). ALT is the UK’s leading membership organisation in the learning technology field. Its purpose is to ensure that use of learning technology is effective and efficient, informed by research and practice, and grounded in an understanding of the underlying technologies, their capabilities and the situations into which they are placed.

ocTEL is an ideal opportunity to enhance your continuing professional development, and may be of interest to YSJ staff who have completed the SEDA Supporting Learning with Technology (SLT) award, current or aspiring e-Pedagogy Teaching Fellows, or anyone with an interest in technology enhanced learning, teaching & assessment. It would also be of benefit to those working to achieve recognition as Fellows of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) as part of the YSJ CPD Framework.

The Open Course in Technology Enhanced Learning starts on 28th April 2014, and you can register for #ocTEL at https://www.alt.ac.uk/civicrm/event/info?reset=1&id=101, or find out more at http://octel.alt.ac.uk/.
