Innovative Assessment in Media Enterprise

Second year Arts students on the Media Enterprise module are creating collaborative websites and online portfolios for assessment…

Assessment Brief

Students are required to focus on three specific areas as they pitch for the role as a creative team for a fictional organisation:

  1. A Company Blog – an online presence for their newly created media company.
  2. An App – an idea for an original app.
  3. Re-Branding Exercise – a re-brand of an existing business or organisation.

Students are assessed via a portfolio/website and a final ‘pitch’ or presentation, with two additional opportunities for formative assessment in weeks 5 & 9.

Areas of focus for the assessment include: target audience, branding & associations, communication strategy, and competitive positioning. Students are also required to give serious thought to the structure and organisation of their project team.

Students are given some guidance on which platform to use, but are free to choose whichever platform they prefer, and examples below can be seen using Blogger, Tumblr, and WordPress.com.

“There is some really excellent work emerging from the module…”
(Dr Melanie Chan, Lecturer, Media)

This is just one example of the creative approaches to assessment across the Faculty of Arts, of which there are many, please leave your questions or comments below…

YSJ now has an installation of WordPress, meaning all staff and students have the ability to (individually or collaboratively) create websites and blogs. Ideas for how blogs/websites can be used in Teaching, Learning & Assessment can be found on the TEL website, or contact TEL@yorksj.ac.uk for more information.
