Using WordPress for Evaluation & Feedback

post-its-ideaThere are many great tools available for collecting student evaluation or feedback in a session – TextWall, Padlet, Socrative, QR codes, Post-it notes (that’s right, we love them too) – they all work great for small amounts of text, but if you want students to contribute larger amounts of text (a paragraph or two), either individually or collaboratively, then you could use a WordPress blog!

If you don’t already have one, you can activate your WordPress blog at http://blog.yorksj.ac.uk/ (YSJ staff & students), then you can use the Jetpack plugin feature called ‘Posts by Email‘.

Post by Email is a way of publishing posts on your blog using your email. Any email client can be used to send the email, allowing you to publish quickly and easily from devices such as cell phones if you don’t have the WordPress mobile app installed.

You can do this in a few easy steps:

  1. Activate the Post by Email module on the Jetpack screen
  2. Go to Users → Your Profile screen
  3. Generate a special email address by clicking Enable Post by Email

Then you can share the email address with your students or delegates, they can send emails to that address, and anything in their email gets added to the blog.

If you were doing this synchronously then you could simply refresh the page in your browser to show the latest submissions, and once ideas have been collected via this method, people can then comment on them as usual.

What do you do to stimulate participation in lectures, or capture feedback & evaluation? Would you consider using this approach?
