I have always had a passion for learning and teaching, I feel I have expressed this interest throughout my time in school and at university by undergoing several placements within the education system. Each placement has given me a cast and wide experiences even though each placement was different from the last.
When I was in high school I underwent a two week placement as a classroom assistant in a primary school and later did another week in a different class in the same school. This was when I discovered I wanted to go into primary education.
As well as this, I ran a drama club for KS3 pupils for three years, this included planning and leading the sessions, during this time we put on two plays a year as well as script writing and many other things.
While at university I have done three placements all with different requirements. The first placement I did was in a primary school teaching dance alongside another practitioner to KS1 pupils, our sessions ran for 1 hour every week for 6 weeks, this placement entailed planning and running the workshops alongside my colleague and we were observed teaching a session at the end of the placement.
My second placement was alongside two other practitioners in an SEND school, me and another practitioner were there to support the lead practitioner in running workshops with three different class in the primary school each with different abilities, I felt this placement was more challenging than the first as it was the first time I had worked in this setting but I found this was so rewarding and feel I gained many skills from this that I wouldn’t have in any other placement. This placement also ran once a week for 6 weeks.
My third placement was in a high school, I took this placement as I felt I wanted to try working within a high school setting as I alway thought I wanted to work within the primary education industry yet had not experienced working within a high school. This was the longest placement I did while at university as it was three two hour sessions a week for 4 months, in this placement I was an assistant choreographer for the schools musical, my role entailed choreographing three dances and teaching this to the cast involved in these dances, as well as working alongside the lead choreographer and director and aiding them where necessary. This placement gave me a different perspective on teaching and I feel I gained a lot of experience and skills that I wish to further develop.
To further develop as a potential teacher before I undergo my PGCE, I am going to America for three months to work with children and young adults with autism, I wanted to push myself out of my comfort zone to gain the most experience I possible can to help me gain all the skills and techniques possible to become the best teacher I can be.
