NO PASARÁN: An Ensemble Visual Texts Catalogue Document

Throughout my first year, I learned the history, lineage and methodology of contemporary theatre practice. Ensemble Visual Texts brought our new collective knowledge and experience together to create a contemporary piece of visual theatre. It was here where I first explored the work of Pina Bausch and Robert Wilson, two of my main influences; I also explored Wilson’s work by being involved in a third year’s project inspired by him (See A Pleasant Pineapple, 2017). I learned that by stripping back theatre to the essentials of bodies and images in a space, one can create evocative theatre. In this project, I realised that I wanted to make visual, affective theatre that provoked emotional and philosophical contemplation.
The subject matters connected to Pablo Picasso’s Guernica (1937) resonated with me as an artist. My practice began to explore both the beauty and aesthetics of human nature whilst also acknowledging the atrocities we as humans have committed.
