Interview Tips! National Student Employment Week

It’s National Student Employment Week and what better time than now to start thinking about your future employment? With that in mind, here are some quick tips to get you ready and raring for your journey into the world of work!

Interview Tips!

There are many types of interviews: phone, face-to-face, skype/video and assessment centres. Depending on which one you’re going to have, you might have to prepare in different ways, but hopefully the following tips will steer you in the correct direction!

    1. Appearance. It’s pretty obvious but make sure you look professional when going for an interview. Even if you’re having a skype interview, at least make sure what’s on show is smart! (That means you could get away with wearing your slippers!) If in doubt, wear a suit. Dark colours look smart too, just make sure whatever you decide to wear is appropriate, wear something you’d be happy to meet your old high school Head teacher in. Tidy your hair, shine your shoes, brush your teeth!
    2. Research. Research about the company that you’ll be interviewing for, research the people that might be interviewing, research you future boss. All of this information will allow you to tailor your answers and show that you’re passionate and really want this job. This will set you aside from other candidates too! You could also research frequently asked questions in interviews, especially if you’re nervous. This is a great way to settle your nerves and plan what you want to say, rather than you worrying about not saying anything at all.
    3. Positivity. Be polite and courteous when meeting your potential new employer. Shake their hand and remember to smile. Be positive about yourself and elaborate on your skills and experiences. Never badmouth your previous employers or work colleagues.
    4. Preparation. Remember to bring everything you need for the interview, like proof of ID, any DBS checks or academic certificates. There’s no good looking the part when you’ve forgotten everything you need to prove you’re great for the job!
    5. Clarity. It’s okay to stumble in interviews and it’s okay to be nervous. But just remember the people interviewing you are human too, so they won’t be angry if you forget words or mumble. Just remember to not panic, if you didn’t hear the question or need some more time to think of an answer just ask them to repeat the question. Speak clearly and slowly so they can hear you and try not to rush through it. Breathe and remember you’re going to do great!
    6. Body-language. In your interview, don’t slouch; it really doesn’t give off a good impression. Sit up straight, shake your potential new employer’s hand, and try to retain eye contact.

Hopefully these techniques will help you secure your dream job!
