Beyond the walls 2022 submissions

Dear students,

York St. John University Creative Writing Students on the 2nd year Working with Words: Publishing and Performance module are seeking submissions of writing and art for Beyond the Wallsan anthology showcasing work by YSJ students.  We encourage you to submit multiple pieces; however, please submit no more than three of either prose, poetry, or non- fiction. Only third year students and postgraduate students who study Creative Writing and/ or English Literature at York St. John University may submit.

Only one piece will be chosen to appear in the anthology, per person. Please submit your work to beyondthewallseditorial@outlook.com.

The theme for the anthology this year is distance.

This theme is open to all submissions, interpretations, and genres; however, we want to deviate from discussion of COVID. Please try to remain aware of both the metaphorical and literal ideas of distance.

Prompts to Consider:

  • Class and wealth disparity
  • Relationships
  • Journeys
  • National/international identity

The anthology will be published and distributed by Lendal Press; an independent press based in York. Lendal Press specialise in challenging and distinctive fiction, as well as inspirational non- fiction.

Submission Guidelines:

Please provide your name, pen name (if applicable), programme, and year of study. Please also state the title(s) of your piece(s).

  1. Maximum of 1,200 words for each piece of prose or non-fiction.
  2. Maximum of 30 lines for each poem.
  3. All forms of literature will be considered.
  4. If you wish to submit other forms of art, such as illustrations, please consult the editing team at beyondthewallseditorial@outlook.com.

Please submit all pieces in the .doc or .docx format or as PDF. Any other format will not be viable for submission.

The submission window opens on Monday, 21st February and closes at 12:00pm on Monday, 14th March 2022.

Kind regards,

2nd year Working with Words Students

*Please note that there is also a Beyond the Walls student showcase on 23rd March. This is not a call for submissions for that event.

Beyond the Walls: New Writing from York St John University is an annual anthology, collecting short fiction, poetry, and other new writing from graduating PhD, MA and BA students in Creative Writing at York St John University.

The anthology is also edited, designed, and published entirely by undergraduate students on our module, Working with Words: Publishing and Performance. Launch events and readings are organised by students on the module each spring as part of York Literature Festival.

Beyond the Walls is available at our public events and open days. Since 2018, it has been published and distributed by our partner, Valley Press and their imprint Lendal Press.
