Where Ideas Grow

A blog for students of creative writing at York St John University

The Belly of the Earth

We wash ourselves in the

Nectarine sun,

Bathing in her tranquil glow,

Rippling as clouds above,

In a lonely sky.

We are jaded droplets

Slipping away,

Melting into the undergrowth,

The belly of the earth,

Bleeding through the open wounds

Of the universe,

We are everywhere at once.

Flowing as the river veins,

Which web across the surface.

We live upon both sides

Of this mortal, rusted coin,

Far beneath the beating seas,

Whilst shining like a million suns,

In the belly of the Earth.

– Indee Watson

Indee is a writer from Yorkshire, with a love for poetry and prose, and studied creative writing at York St John. Whilst her prose takes on a mythical, gothic tone, her poetry is often metaphorical, introspective and environmental, as published in Over Yonder and York Literary Review. This piece was inspired by the tranquillity of Summer; the idea of being so peaceful that the sun almost melts you through the world.
