Where Ideas Grow

A blog for students of creative writing at York St John University

Four Leaf Clover

four leaf clover, good to know you

brought out the best in me

I picked you perfect, kept you secret

and stored away the key

I held on tightly, ever so slightly

scared to know the end

I saw it coming, but kept on running

for you I would pretend

it wasn’t fated, but nothing’s tainted

our memories stay the same

I’ll say it softly, how I’m sorry

I know that I’m to blame

four leaf clover, all blown over

I place the wreckage in my heart

I’ll watch over, now there’s closure

even when we’re far apart

people told me, you were my only

I lost your leaflets one by one

you were hopeful, I was faithful

now our luck’s all gone

but my love for you carries on

-Becca Green

Becca Green is a Creative Writing and English Literature student at York St John University. At the moment, she is undertaking a placement year in London as part of her course, but still regularly writes poetry in her spare time. Poetry helps her reflect on and come to terms with significant changes in her life. This piece was inspired by the idea of missing someone who you had to let go.
