Here are some audiobook recommendations from the beyond the walls blogs and podcasting team:
Alexa: I really enjoy the idiot books narrated by Jayne Entwistle. Works she has narrated include Little by Edward Carey, Edith Holler by Edward Carey, and the Flavia de Luce series by Alan Bradley. She had a really amazing voice that has a very “historical” sound to it, making her an amazing period story narrator.
Melody: I recommend any Star Wars Audiobook but in particular Light Of The Jedi By Charles Soule. The sound effects and narration by Marc Thompson immerse you in the story and make you feel like your following A Star Wars Movie.
Qnwan: One audiobook I would recommend is Caught Up by Liz Tomforde. It is one of my favourite books, so after reading it I decided to listen to the audiobook as well. I really enjoy hearing the story in a different format, especially because the narration brings the characters and dialogue to life. I tend to listen to audiobooks after I have already read the book, as it allows me to experience a story I enjoyed again in a new way.
Ewan: Dakota Krout’s Artorian’s Archives– Voiced by a weary old man, the audio format immerses the reader in the fiction, making the feebleness of the protagonist embellished, and his eventual recovery and the return of his vitality all the more satisfying, as the skilled voice actor conveys health and energy returning from the laboured, decrepit voice featured in the beginning of the story.
Emily: Donna Tartt’s The Secret History– An audiobook spoken aloud by the author herself, giving the piece more depth and a personal touch.
Natasha: My favourite audiobook is the 2024 Audible Original audio drama adaptation of George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four, starring Andrew Garfield, Andrew Scott and Cynthia Erivo. This is my favourite as the music and voice acting throughout the piece really make the story a more immersive experience and highlights the dystopian horror that George Orwell conveys in his original book.
Colleen: I enjoy The Last Unicorn written by Peter S. Beagle. Narrated by Clare Corbett.
Freya: I really used to like The Nothing Girl written by Jodi Taylor and narrated by Lucy Price-Lewis as I think it is a really heart-warming slightly magical story and the narrators voice really fits, the rest of the series is good also.
