Open communication

Because sign language relies on visual input, a clear line of sight is vital in allowing for accessible communication.

  • In a group situation, being in a circle is optimal, as everyone can see everyone and there are no blind spots.
  • A circle also allows for everyone to be equal in the group, no one is at the head, no one is at the front and it gives more of a community feel as shown in the painting.
  • In a classroom setup, a horseshoe layout is often used. This gives students a clear line of sight to lecturers and to other classmates.
  • You can also see that all the chairs in the classrooms are on wheels and can rotate all the way round.
  • This is also to allow for better communication as students can easily move to be able to see everything and everyone.

Examples of good classroom layout from Gallaudet University (The worlds only Deaf University, in America)
