Dear Hearing World

I have been looking into the world of creative art within the deaf community. I have found an amazing interpretation of the poem ‘Dear Hearing World’ which was wrote by Raymond Antrobus. There is a rap version of the poem which was performed by Vilma Jackson. This offers a more up to date performance which is more appealing to the younger market.

Raymond Antrobus wrote this poem after deciding he needed to go back into Deaf schools when he one day came across a statistic that announced that around 75% of Deaf people in the Uk grow up illiterate and in Jamaica (His heritage) 95% of those who grow up profoundly Deaf were illiterate. This doesn’t mean that deaf people don’t have language. It means it is the way it has been assessed and protected within the society.
