Volunteering Opportunity: Light Night 2018

Light Night 2018 Volunteer Information

Light Night is a multi-arts and light festival which takes over Leeds city centre on 2 nights in early October. The city’s arts and cultural venues open their doors late into the evening, and artists transform indoor and outdoor spaces into exciting, interactive works of art.

This year’s festival will take place on the evenings of Thursday 4th and Friday 5th October. Volunteers must also be able to attend one of our briefing sessions taking place at 6pm on Wednesday 19th September and 6pm on Monday 24th September.

Being such a large city-wide event, which is increasing in popularity year on year, Light Night relies on a large number of volunteers. The role of Light Night Festival Volunteer will involve a number of different duties, and opportunities may vary depending on what this year’s Light Night priorities are.  You may be asked to assist an artist, undertake market research, or work as a visitor assistant.

reflections on studying abroad: amsterdam

by Charlotte Stevenson

Earlier this year in March, just after the daffodils were gone, I received an email saying that my application to study abroad for a semester had been approved and that I would officially be a student of Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam as of September 2017. That day was a good day and, in the time since then, so much has happened. Continue reading “reflections on studying abroad: amsterdam”

a literary experience; or, the summertime epiphanies of a final year english literature student

By Tia Byer

For Emma Stone in Easy A, it seems to be “always the way” that there is a connection between the literature we study in class and the way it resonates in real life. I have often mused upon this myself. But during the last two years of my undergraduate degree in literature, I have never fully grasped the true meaning behind this notion. All that was about to change. This summer I actually had one of those experiences.

creative writing opportunity: the poetry show

YSJU graduate Beth Cairns has been in touch to advertise an exciting opportunity to current students. Beth now works for York’s library service, Explore York, and writes:

On Thursday 28th September we will be hosting Rose Drew and Alan Gillott from The Poetry Show podcast. They will be recording an edition of podcast in Acomb Library, and will be inviting people to read a poem for it.  If any students would like an opportunity to share their work please let us know and come along from 3pm.

All budding writers, from Literature and the Creative Writing programmes, are encouraged to contact Beth and get themselves to Acomb library if interested.

graduate internship opportunity: yorkmix

YorkMix Media have been in touch to advertise an internship as Sports, Media and Communications intern. YorkMix writes:

The role is to report on sports across York but predominantly home games for York City FC and York City Knights RLFC. You will also take responsibility for raising the profile of both teams via social media and you will produce copy for news in brief for York TV.

This is a great opportunity to gain experience of sports journalism working alongside two of York’s sports clubs while reporting for YorkMix. You will also have the opportunity to feed into the newly launched York TV. This is a part time role of 28 hours per week over 30 weeks – this is a paid internship.

Interested parties from YSJU’s 2017 graduating class are invited to contact internships@yorksj.ac.uk for more information.

student opportunity: valley press

The ‘readers group’ at Valley Press is  recruiting new members to look at submissions via email. If you join, every week (ish) you will be sent poetry and novels that Valley Press are considering publishing – totally free of charge! All you have to do is read through them – whichever ones you choose, and totally at your leisure – and then send us your thoughts.

This would be fantastic experience for a literature student. To join, email Submissions Coordinator Tess and let her know.
