Aesthetica Creative Writing Award: Call for Entries

The 11th Aesthetica Creative Writing Award is now open for entries, presenting an opportunity for emerging and established writers and poets to showcase their work to new international audiences and further their involvement in the literary world.

Prizes include:

  • £1,000 Poetry Winner
  • £1,000 Short Fiction Winner
  • Publication in the Aesthetica Creative Writing Annual for 60 finalists
  • Consultation with Redhammer Management (Short Fiction Winner)

Short Fiction entries should be no more than 2,000 words. Poetry entries should be no more than 40 lines. Works previously published are accepted.

Kevin Elyot Writer’s residency award, Bristol

The University of Bristol Theatre Collection is delighted to announce that applications are open for the Kevin Elyot Award. This annual award will support a promising writer by enabling them to be resident in the Theatre Collection and begin the process of creating a new work inspired by Kevin’s archive, which may be a dramatic, creative or academic piece of writing

It comprises £3,000 to fund the residency for four weeks (which may be consecutive or split), and will also offer support with research and public dissemination of the work. The award has been generously funded by an endowment given to the University by members of Kevin’s family.

Kevin Elyot (1951 to 2014) was a Bristol alumnus (Drama Department) who started his career as an actor, but went on to achieve great success through his ground-breaking plays and adaptations. The Kevin Elyot Archive is held at the University of Bristol Theatre Collection, and comprises scripts, correspondence, manuscript and publicity material detailing Kevin’s working process from initial idea to finished product. His process for adapting novels for television is well documented in the archive. Whilst, the content relating to his plays, including the seminal My Night with Reg, demonstrates his creative process and the particular emphasis he placed on the importance of style and form within a play.

 

It is hoped the award will celebrate Kevin’s life and work and the influence he has had on theatre and, through it, will enable a new generation of writers to find creative inspiration in the archive.

York St John University Summer Internship Launch

Join us on Tuesday 28 March to find out about our new Summer Internship Programme.

The scheme will be advertising paid summer internship opportunities exclusively available for York St John students and graduates to intern at North Yorkshire-based Small–Medium Enterprises (SME).

With funding available from York St John University and in partnership with the Sodexo Aspiration Scheme, the subsidised funding will support the training allowance for York St John students or recent graduates to work as interns with small-medium-sized businesses for 4, 8 or 12 weeks full-time during the 2017 summer vacation period (June – September).

Summer Internships Back Page

Applicant Eligibility        

You will need to be eligible to work in the UK full-time during the internship. If you are on a visa, your visa must cover the full duration of the internship.

It is the student’s responsibility to ensure they are eligible for the scheme and comply with York St John University sponsorship duties and visa regulations before submitting an application. It is the responsibility of the business to check their intern’s eligibility to work in the UK taking into account the above regulations.

Internships can be anything between 4 and 12 weeks, with a starting date anytime from the 5th June 2017 ending 1st September 2017.

Once the employer has made an internship offer and you have accepted that offer, York St John Careers will send both you the intern, and the employer, an agreement letter each to fill in and return to York St John. Please note that funding for the internship will not be released to the organisation until these completed letters are returned.

The proposal form we will ask all companies to complete about their vacancy will ask the question of whether they already have a student or graduate in mind to hire. Black History Month – Black History Month is developed mainly by the English Literature team. Frequently involving projects developed by students, and visiting authors, the month is inspiring and enriching – don’t miss it this October!

Writer in Residence – Royal Literary Fellow Mark Illis has been writing novels, short stories, TV and Radio dramas for around 30 years. He’s done it all, and can help you with developing your writing. If you head to a meeting, you’ll get 45 minutes of literary goodness. Teacher Training Event 29 November

Ebor Teaching Schools Alliance will be on campus on Tuesday 29th November to run a panel session. The focus of the event will be to inform students of their options regarding teaching training, and specifically the Schools Direct route.

Ebor Teaching Schools Alliance offer both Primary and Secondary Schools Direct programmes.

This is an opportunity for you to offer some vital feedback on your engagement with your Literature and Creative Writing Programmes, learn more about prospective careers paths, and reflect on your learning so far. This is intended to be a helpful and informative session to help you during your final year of study, and there will lots of opportunities for group work and discussion. Black History Month Creative Writing Competition

 

October 2016 sees a month long celebration and remembrance of important people and events in the history of the African diaspora. It is celebrated across the world as has been a feature of the UK calendar since 1987.

At York St John we will be participating in Black History Month with a series of events taking place on campus. This will include a month long exhibition in the Arts Foyer and three evening events celebrating art, literature and cultural history.

As part of our programme we are running a creative writing competition with the winner to be announced at a special evening with the poet Jack Mapanje on 27th October.  We are looking for submissions of no more than 500 words that explore any aspect of black history. We are happy to accept work in prose or verse and encourage you to draw on your educational experiences and beyond.

Say Owt! Poetry Slam

This weekend sees the return to York of the popular Say Owt Slam #11, featuring Scott Tyrell and hosted by local poet Henry Raby.

Borderlands symposium 6th June: programme and registration

We’re pleased to announce the final programme for upcoming symposium on ‘Borderlands’, organised by students on the MA in Contemporary Literature, has been completed. Download the Borderlands Programme here.

 

Borderlands are defined as being both ‘an area of land close to a border between two countries’ and ‘an area between two qualities, ideas or subjects that has features of both but is not clearly one or the other’ (Oxford Dictionaries, 2016). The significance of borders and borderlands has become particularly prevalent in contemporary society. Literature has always responded to the issues of its context of production such as Burke writing on the French Revolution up to and including Chimamanda Ngozi Adiche’s 2013 novel Americanah addressing global concerns of nationality and migration. Following recent events such as the refugee ‘crisis’, the Scottish Referendum, issues of borders are constantly being reshaped, creating liminal spaces in which literature can respond and has a tradition of responding to.

 

Americanah  This one-day symposium invites critical reflection on the role of ‘borders’ and ‘borderlands’ in contemporary literature (from 1975 onwards). We aim to celebrate and reflect on a number of issues in current literature addressing ‘the border’ in its multiple forms: What do we mean when we talk about borderlands? How are borders represented in literature? Is role of the border more significant to different types of people? How is the role of the borderland important in modern literature? We are delighted to welcome the curator of the Lawrence Sterne Trust’s Shandy Hall Patrick Wildgust and Phillips’ creative producer Lucy Shortis to York St John University to talk about the work of Tom Phillips and his extraordinary work A Humument.

A Humument has been a work in progress since 1996 when artist Tom Phillips set himself a talks: to find a second-hand book for three pence and to alter every page by painting, collage and cut-up techniques to create an entirely new version.

 

The talk will share Tom’s work in progress and offer students the opportunity to treat a page to enter into a gallery exhibition of Tom Phillip’s work at the Shandy Hall Gallery Coxwold, from 8th May – 26th June.

Recruitment for YSJ Arts Magazine

So here’s the deal. Myself and some fellow students came up with the vision of a magazine produced, written and managed entirely by students here at York St. John. Recently it’s gathered a bit of momentum and has become something of a project (We are registered with the SU as society and have several members) and at this stage we are in need of talent, initiative, as well as some hard work to really get the thing moving. How much you want to contribute is up to you, maybe even just a suggestion or pointer. Understandably though, for this to work we need some people who are ready to commit and have a willingness to engage in productive relationships with others.

 

At this point the project has no unified vision or direction but plenty of enthusiasm and certainly on my part there’s a willingness to really get it organised and produce something really honest, inspired and creative; an efficient use of people’s talents; an entity that will flower and become a force that moves…

 

As the magazine is still in its formation we welcome ideas and vision, but it would be a good idea to briefly outline the sort of things we’re looking for to set you in the right direction. Think about what you’d like to see, what would be appreciated.

 

– ART. This could be articles, news and reviews of live music, literature, film, TV, theatre, exhibitions- interesting cultural events or festivals happening in York. The vision of the  magazine as being a space for people’s quality creative work is something I’d like to push. Think creative writing  (i.e. poems, short stories) photography and comic strips. There are endlessly creative ways this could be done. Maybe competitions and stuff like that.

 

-INTERVIEWS. Plenty of bands, artists and speakers come to town, some of whom would give us at least a few words. Some student interviews would also be good about topics relevant to student life. There are plenty of ‘ordinary’  people around here with charisma and something interesting to say, so some fun could be had. Academics? locals? People who are naturally dynamic and sincere in their interactions.

 

-STUDENT LIFE. Discussion of issues relevant specifically to life as York St. John student. News from societies, information about events happening at uni.

 

-FORMATTING AND GRAPHIC DESIGN. Especially as we’re going old school, experimenting with printing paper copies, it’s essential to have someone accomplished at this. Think about cover designs too. It would be nice to have some drawing, make it something aesthetically appealing.

 

Let’s keep it engaging, engaged, honest, informed, useful, quality, insightful, relevant, heart-warming where we can.

 

The current name of the magazine is ‘Square One’. I’m growing to like it, but let us know if you have any other suggestions.
