In summer 2021, I took part in the British Ecological Society’s (BES) undergraduate Summer School and I wanted to share my experience for any other students looking to pursue a career in ecology.
Urban Geography Fieldtrip to Newcastle
First year Urban Geography students visited Newcastle city centre on 5th November. After field observations in the Newcastle-Gateshead Quayside, Grainger Town, and Haymarket areas, we ended the day with a fantastic tour of Newcastle Helix, led by Tom Bramald, Marketing Manager at the site, and Head of Enterprise Marketing at Newcastle University. We saw and heard about the site’s contributions towards Newcastle being ranked 23rd worldwide in the 2020 Smart City Index, published by the IMD Smart City Observatory (SCO). This position is particularly because of its research and innovation on climate change adaptation and mitigation, ageing, and data capture. The students saw processes we’ve covered in the module in action, including globalization’s local impacts, entrepreneurial cities, regeneration, and the conflicts between economic, social, and environmental sustainability.
