Actor & Theatre Maker
I am an actor and theatre maker. I am soon to graduate from York St John University with a Drama & Theatre BA (Hons) and I hope to start studying an Acting MA starting in September 2020.
I believe that my work as a theatre maker and as an actor are important to each other, for I have found that developing and refining my practice in one of these areas has benefited my learning in the other. In my experience writing, directing and performing in my own work I have gained an understanding of the important role which the actor plays within a piece of theatre. To create a character or piece of material knowing that I will be performing it requires a level of self-awareness. I believe that this is a highly value quality in any actor as it allows for more truthful and vulnerable performances.
Additionally, creating theatre for my own cast allows me to examine other actors and learn from their own processes. By identifying their strengths I can develop my own practice, adapting their techniques to my own approach. I also use this knowledge to improve my theatre making, adapting the work to suit my cast.
I have acted in various performances before university. Some of my roles include performing in two Hull UK City of Culture 2017 pieces with Hull Truck Youth Theatre. These performances included Defiance, a devised theatre piece collaboratively created by Hull Truck Youth theatre and the over 55s group Act III. I also had the opportunity to play the role of Mr. Lammle in the debut production of Bryony Lavery’s adaptation of Charles Dickens’ Our Mutual Friend.
During my time at university I have had a role both creating and performing in various productions. Taking part in these has allowed my to develop my skills as a performer and develop my craft as a theatre maker. In 2018 I co-wrote and performed in The Friend (also featuring James Corden’s AMAZING Show!). This was a surrealist reinterpretation of both the sitcom Friends and The Late Late Show with James Corden. In the same year I created and performed in Shivers, a solo autobiographical performance using multi-role.
I also performed in various independent projects by fellow students. In 2019 I played the role of Michael in Joe McCallum’s devised piece A Facade of Floating Fairly, and the role of Banquo in Unholy War by Leon Walker, a modern re-imagining of Macbeth.
Outside of university, I played the role of Judas in the The Remorse of Judas as part of the York Mystery Plays 2018. I also performed in Edith in the Dark as part of the Leeds City Goth Festival 2018. I also performed in 2/40, Destruction and Beauty’s devised performance about the Sheffield Flood as part of the Demand a Future Night Forum on Climate Emergency in 2019.
In 2020 I independently devised and performed in my own piece, Father’s Day, as well as playing key roles in productions by fellow students. These included ‘A Perfected Reality’, a physical theatre in education performance about social media addiction by Lydia Egglesden. I also played the role of Steve Jobs in Woz the Great and Powerful, a satirical comedy about the tech company Apple by Rhys Speight.
