York Society of Hauntologists

Established in 2024 by researcher Lowen Frampton, the York Society of Hauntologists is folk horror reading and discussion group.

We are the York Society of Hauntologists, a new group in collaboration with the Hauntology and Spectrality Research Group based at York St John University.

Our aim is to create a space for people interested in Hauntology, Folk Horror, Psychogeography, and other similarly spooky themes to come together in the city of York for a sharing of ideas and discussion. Potential future events include film screenings, academic talks, music nights, book groups, and anything else that inspires us as we go along.

Folk Horror Book Club
We are currently running a Folk Horror book club and discussion group. This event is open to anyone – YSJ students, staff, members of the public, your weird neighbour – with an interest in reading more folk horror and talking about it with other like-minded people.

We meet on the last Wednesday of the month at 7pm at the Black Swan Inn, Peaseholme Green.

Our reading and meeting schedule is as follows:

2024
30th October: Randall’s Round by Eleanor Scott
27th November: Barrowbeck by Andrew Michael Hurley
18th December: Dark is Rising by Susan Cooper (the book of this name, not the whole series!). This will be a slightly different meeting – we will be downstairs at the Black Swan instead of upstairs (still meeting at 7pm).

Watch this space for more about this event and others to come!
