Based in York, I am a Theatre Maker, Facilitator and Performer who plans to use their work to tell the stories of people and place through the use of story telling, performance vignettes and theatre images.
I believe in the value of identity, voice and memory of every person and every place. I believe in using theatre as a way of telling stories which are so often forgotten or overlooked by society. My work is experimental in form and dynamics, using some elements of naturalism and blurring this with unique story telling and abstract imagery. I want to use my theatre to make a difference to the world, by telling the world the stories which are not often told.
I believe in using theatre as a way of inviting different groups of people into a creative engagement by making theatre which is not only ‘for, by and with’ differentiating communities, but also tells the untold stories of lost ‘working class’ communities.
During my time at York St John, I have learned the necessary skills I believe will aid me and prepare me for a future career in Socially Engaged Work and Community Arts Practice. Throughout my degree, a passion has grown from within me which has allowed me to appreciate how:
- Art has a useful contribution to make to the world, and artists can serve society, not by making woks of art, but through their verbal interactions in the context of institutions and organisations (Bishop, 2012 :165).
My goal is to be able to combine my skills of facilitation, theatre making, directing and performance with my passion of working closely with communities. I aspire to continue making work which gives communities a voice, and tells the forgotten stories of place, identity and person.
Attached to this portfolio is my CV, Cover Letter and Application form for the role of Creative Engagement Coordinator , and a review on intimacy in performance. Within my reflections of past projects I will talk about how my experiences have prepared me for the role of Creative Engagement Coordinator, and how I aspire to take my work into a professional environment. I am in three theatre companies, Tree Top Theatre, Tagged and a newly formed theatre company Blue Flamingos. I endeavour to keep working as both a performer and theatre maker in these companies alongside my work as a Creative Engagement Coordinator.
