Primary: Public vs. Alternative

The alternative previously described (combination between homeschool and forest school) has some valuable component that the current public school system lacks. It allows for more individuality. Students are able to have a schedule that works the best for them, learn at their own pace, learn more about topics that interest them, and wear clothes that show their individual personalities. It allows students to learn to be independent. They learn to work through lessons online by themselves, and choose a schedule that works best for them. The alternative also allows students to experience more hands-on learning. Through the forest school aspect, students will learn about the environment around them and important social skills with their peers.

While there are many positives that would come out of having this type of education system. It is not practical to use this alternative as the main source of education for the public. For this system to work well it would require students to have high self-motivation. Since students and parents have to option to set their own schedule, they would have to be really motivated to do so regularly. As we are seeing during the coronavirus, it can be difficult at times even for students at university to have motivation when working at home. Having this free of a schedule would probably only be successful for students that are very motivated and proactive. Sadly, not all students are like this, so this would not work for the public as a whole. Some students also need additional support when compared to the general public. For example some students with disabilities need help from aides on a daily basis to accomplish tasks in school. This proposed alternative currently doesn’t have a plan in place to address this issue.

The ability to create your own schedule may be a very useful aspect for some families, however, not all. For parents that work a 9-5 job, they normally do not have to pay for much child-care. With this alternative they would now have to find another place for their child to stay throughout the work day. This could cause financial hardship on some lower income families. Teaching children after returning home from work could also put an additional strain on the parents. It would also be challenging for parents to teach their kids if they have multiple children at home that are similar in age.

The forest school has some challenging aspects as well. For example, it would be hard to make a national curriculum for the forest school portion. The outdoor spaces that students would have access to are very different in various area of the UK. A students living in London would not have the same resources available to them in their outdoor spaces, as people that live in the country.

Overall, there are some very important qualities in forest school/homeschool alternative, however, it is not practical to try to make it the new normal. It could exist as another educational alternative, but right now, it would not be able to replace the current public school system in the UK.
