LGBT+ and Deaf

What does it mean to be LGBT+ and Deaf?

Coming out

“Coming out” is a term used when someone who is not straight announces their sexuality, either to themselves or others.

This is typically a major event in every LGBT+ person’s life. There’s a lot of fear that comes with making such a personal statement. Unfortunately, not everyone is accepting but many are and “coming out” can be a wonderful and happy moment.

As a hearing person, it can be difficult to come to terms with being part of a minority so as a Deaf person it would mean belonging to two minorities. This can carry a lot of pressure on a person, and parents may worry about the problems their child may face when in these two communities.
