Three final York LGBT History Month 2016 events at York St John University

Ten days left of the huge York LGBT History Month 2016 programme and we have three more events taking place at York St John University, as detailed below!

Don’t miss them!

Wednesday 24 February

World Café: religious constructions of LGBT* sexualities
15:30-17:00 | DG/223, De Grey Court, York St John University, Lord Mayor’s Walk, YO31 7EX

How does religion portray LGBT* people and their lives? How does religious discourse establish and sustain heteronormativity in our societies? World Café provides an inclusive, informal and safe space for sharing insights and connecting diverse perspectives. In this spirit, we will explore creatively the way LGBT* identities are constructed within religion and the heteronormative way in which they are often discussed. This session will be facilitated by Dr Anna Zoli and Rachael Booth (York St John University) who are undertaking a joint research project on these issues. Everyone is welcome to join the discussion!

Organised by: York St John University
Tickets: Not required

Negotiating faith, gender identity and sexual orientation
19:00-20:30 | Temple Hall (TW/007), York St John University, Lord Mayor’s Walk, YO31 7EX

In a similar vein to last year’s Queerstion Time, the official closing night (but not the last event!) will bring a Question Time-style panel discussion on matters of LGBT equality and inclusion. This time the focus will be on interactions and intersections with faith communities, bringing together panellists from local Buddhist, Christian, Humanist, Muslim and Jewish communities. The event will be chaired by theologian Dr Fiona Thompson. Submit your questions in advance!

Monday 29 February

Fully queer, fully here: being a trans, lesbian priest in the Church today
19:30-21:30 | Chapel (CP/002), York St John University, Lord Mayor’s Walk, YO31 7EX

Rachel Mann has quite a story to tell. A trained philosopher, she transitioned from male to female in her early twenties. Whilst Teaching Fellow at Lancaster University she – to her ongoing surprise – became a Christian. In 2005 she was ordained, and is now rector of a church in South Manchester and Resident Poet at Manchester Cathedral. She writes, broadcasts and talks about the Church, sexuality and gender. Her memoir of growing up trans, Dazzling Darkness, was a Church Times bestseller.
