Industry Day started off today with Ben McAvoy’s talk on his business WMP in Leeds providing music for media whether that be advertisements, library music, or other commissions. He discussed ‘Celebrating the Wins & Sharing the Losses” with the students – the ups and downs of running a media business in Yorkshire.
Ed Heaton, local producer and record label owner of HA!MUSIC returned as our annual compere for the day also offering studio sessions with students in the afternoon .
This year’s keynote speaker was forensic musicologist Peter Oxendale, who discussed a number of experiences and cases of his 40 year career in the
music industry. Peter shared anecdotes of recent legal challenges over contested copyright enfringements as well as experiences from his days touring with Chris de Burgh and others.
York St John also welcomed current Audio Engineering Society chair Charlie Slee (and Big Bear Audio director) to discuss the ‘route to production’ of his boutique analogue 500-series designs
Analogue designer and electronic engineer Jake Rothman discussed the ‘problems with loudpeakers’ providing a inspiring talk and later workshops to students.
As with all Industry Days, students were encouraged to spend time discussing
their careers and aspirations with Industry Partners in a social setting.
