Bringing our university to you.

Time Management

You were probably at school 30 hours a week, and you probably had a timetable telling you where you needed to be and when. University is very different. You may not have very many ‘contact hours’ – this is time you’re scheduled to have in class with your professors or tutors.

Instead, you may have introductory lectures, and then a lot of free time to research, do homework, complete assignments and read around the subject area. Ultimately, what you do with your free time is up to you. But you get out what you put in, and it’s recommended that you spend some of your time diving deeper into your subject area and preparing for assignments and classes.

Many students also have other commitments such as families, jobs, volunteering and many others. Having more free time on your course may allow you to balance these commitments.

One of the challenges of university is managing your time and priorities effectively – there is lots of advice on how you can do this, but practice makes perfect!

James, a mature student ambassador at York St John, details his experience of managing his time at university.
