Student Elections Task – Applied Production Skills

https://vimeo.com/338027388

For this task we had to interview one of the candidates for the student elections and create a video that had captions. Filming on the day was relatively easy as we had a large crew and a very prepared interviewee. Filming in the studio was good, however, having a large crew and sound equipment meant that the cables became a trip hazard. This was easily worked around by letting everyone know where the cables were and avoided them. Editing wise, this was my first time doing captions and i spent a lot of my time watching the content and creating a transcript, then going through that and deciding what to cut.

Studio Task – Applied Production Skills

For the studio task I was assigned the role of production design, this meant finding locations and sorting costume. Costume was relatively simple as we just had to look professional with the main character looking a little more rough and unorganized. Our producer made no effort to find any actors for the production so that was left to me and the director and when we did find some they dropped out at the last minute. So in the end I also ended up starring in the film along with more people from the group. I also arranged the location for the filming which was at The Grand York. Despite having connections there, I still had to speak to the events team who kindly allowed us to use the room for the day. I also wrote the script for the film despite the writer who provided a very short, handwritten script that would not have lasted 2 minutes. I wrote the script in my own time, adding scenes and bulking out the very few provided by the writer. Also whilst on set (location and studio) it seemed as though the director struggled to control the group when it was time to film, resulting in me having to countdown to film and take charge in some cases. We also had a sound issue in the studio when the group in prior told us they had left it as it was when they had gone in but the sound had been fiddled with so for our first 45 minutes we had no sound recorded. We got the issue sorted and rushed through our last 10 minutes in the studio trying to get the footage we needed.

Instagram Stories Task – Applied Production Skills

For the Instagram task we had to create an Instagram story and our group chose to follow the hobbies theme. I am a cheerleader for the YSJ Kats and we decided to do a short interview and a demonstration of the dance that is a part of the routine. In preparation for this task we did a very rough list of the shots we wanted and ran through the questions so that when it came to shooting the task it would run smoothly. I enjoy working as part of a group, however one member of the group did not show up to film or help with the edit. The group edit was interesting and a challenge at times due to multiple opinions and inputs, however in the end, I believe this helped make a better product. It was also my first time using graphics in a video, I used them briefly on the SU task, however it wasn’t in such detail. I found them tough to wrap my head around but as I had help with it being a group edit I quickly learnt how to use them.  Health and Safety wise, precautions had to be taken as we were going to film outside on grass, so we had to consider whether it would be too slippy after we had had some bad weather. On the day we filmed it rained so we had to move inside, which eliminated the issue, but then created new ones as we had to be more aware of spacing.

Photography Task – Applied Production Skills

Shallow Depth Of Field

Reflection

Frame Within A Frame

Silhouette

Forced Perspective

I chose to follow the theme of nature for the photography task. Rather than going to the Castle Museum Gardens like a lot of people I know did, I chose to go to the Treasurers House and photograph their gardens. The National Trust house has a small but well-maintained garden full of gorgeous flowers and colours. I struggled with this task as me and the camera just don’t seem to get along, however I applied as much of my own technical knowledge as I could. I didn’t manage to get a long exposure/light painting shot sue to the difficulties I was having with the camera, I was with a group of experienced media students and none of us could quite figure it out. I also struggled getting the frame within a frame, however I then found a group of flowers that had created a small frame. I faced few health and safety issues on this task as I was not filming in a place that could be considered dangerous (near the river for example) The only issue I faced was uneven ground and members of the public who would be visiting the property. To prevent any falls or trips from the uneven ground I just had to watch my steps and look out for any potentially hazardous spots.  When it came to editing my photos, I decided to use the black and white filter, but then mask it so the colour of the subject of the image would show through, essentially combining the themes of colour and nature. However, I was unable to do this on my silhouette image as it lost the effect due to already being a dark image.
