Getting ready for September

Joining YSJ Psychology: technology requirements

Charlotte Elwell, our Technical Team Leader for Psychology, offers an overview of the technology available to you once you join YSJ and advises you about personal devices (e.g., desktops and laptops) compatible with the software programmes you will be using throughout your degree.

What computer equipment will I have access to?

We have a dedicated Psychology computer lab where many of your taught workshops will take place. There are also computers available across campus that you can access, either on a walk-in basis or that are available to reserve in advance.  A limited number of laptops are also available to loan for short periods.

Many students find it helpful to have access to a computer at home too. You can find advice on recommended hardware here: https://www.yorksj.ac.uk/students/digital-resources/it-hardware-guidance/.

What software will I use?

Microsoft Office 365, including Word, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneDrive, will be used extensively. After enrolling as a student at YSJ, you will have access to all Office 365 online apps and will be able to download free copies of Office applications to your own computer. You will also be able to access online and in-person support to help you to develop your digital skills.

Throughout your degree you will also learn how to use specialist programs for running Psychology studies and analysing data. Information on how to access these, along with training on how to use them is integrated within relevant modules, so you’ll be guided through this with the support of experienced staff. You are not expected to have any prior experience of using specialist software.

We look forward to welcoming you in September!
