The current education system provides free education which is compulsory for ages 5-18 (DfE, 2018). This system is organised into three sections, based on age: the first section is primary education, for ages 5-11; the secondary education is for ages 11-16; and the tertiary sector follows, pupils aged between 16-18 must attend some form of education or training, beyond this further education is optional (Haynes and Merrill, 2003). Compulsory education is free at the point of use, for all who choose to be publicly educated.
