How often do you see sign language on TV?

Before I started the Deaf Cultures module in YSJ, I didn’t spare any thoughts for sign language as a whole; the representation it has and the accessibility needed. As a child, I did wonder why there was only occasionally someone on the side of the television when talking about the news and the weather, and I never questioned why there were only some children’s programmes with a person on the side. As I grew, I understood they were interpreters/translators for those who needed it, but that’s where my thoughts and wonders ended.

Now, as a mature student who’s experienced both an academic life and a working life, I’ve had many more opportunities to question why I don’t see more BSL (British Sign Language) on TV. This blog will explore that.
