Winifred Holtby Academy (2018) University Placement – Working with a group of 4 other students to create 6 weeks’ worth of workshop material from the stimulus of ‘It’s Not OK’. ‘It’s Not OK’ is a project created in partnership with York St John University and the NSPCC; it works with young people to recognise the signs of abuse and what to do if someone is being abused. ‘It’s Not OK’ runs with 3 short films, a live theatrical performance, and accompanying workshops. This project runs tours across Britain, working with a variety of schools to educate on the seriousness of abuse. While in Hull, our group devised 6 workshops weekly to complete with 10 students from this school. The age of the group ranged from 11 years to 16 years. As a group we facilitated activities that worked alongside the ‘It’s Not OK’ project. The overall main objective was the group of students to devise and create a short performance to showcase at the York St John University grounds as a response to the programme. This placement worked with teaching the student drama skills and techniques and how to work with sensitive topics.
Prison Partnership Project, HMP Newhall Prison (2019) University Placement – working alongside the project leaders for the Prison Partnership Project a small group of York St John university students visited the Prison once a week for a duration of 6 weeks. During this process we helped assist the facilitation of the workshops, lead our own individual activities with the women, helped create and structure the workshops, and take part in the final showcase performance. The workshops developed the women’s personal emotions through the stimulus of Shakespeare work. The workshops involved devising, creative writing, performing and the use of abstract theatre.
