British Sign Language Society

One of our main goals as a society is to bring sign language and deaf awareness to the wider population and help the learning of basic sign language for those who are not associated with the course. We will be running many charity events for a selection of deaf charities such as Lollipop, and also social events which promote the use of BSL.

Our aims and goals are:

  • To aid students in learning sign language.
  • Engage with deaf communities outside of the university
  • To raise deaf and sign language awareness amongst the university and surrounding area.

Primary Education Society

Hello and welcome to the Primary Education Society’s page!

Our society is open to students studying either the Primary Education course, Education and Child studies courses, PGCE or individuals who are considering teaching in the future. This year the committee aim to hold a variety of socials and CPD events – continual professional development. The society not only provides an opportunity for you to improve your CV, but more importantly to make friends for life and to grow as a person.

Social events allow members to come together as a society – whether they are sober socials or not. In particularly our St. Trinian’s social is not one to miss! We all come together at the start of the year in fancy dress and take on the streets of York!

We are planning lots of new and fun events throughout the year. The Primary Education Society is not only an amazing chance to meet new people, but to improve your CV through courses we provide throughout the year. These courses include restraint training, first aid training, Makaton (sign language), body image and many more. The courses and volunteering work which we arrange can help you stand out as a candidate to prospective employers.

With the joining fee being only £10, our aim is for you to get the most out of your money. We are one of the cheapest societies to join but we also have the most fun! We value everyone’s opinion, so we welcome your new ideas to help you get what you want from your time at YSJ.  Along with your membership you will receive a free Revolution card – a popular cocktail bar in York, where you will receive exclusive discounts on meals and drinks.

As a society we have chosen to continue to support the charity ‘SNAPPY’ – special needs and play provision York. This not only benefits the charity through our sponsorship and volunteering to help vulnerable children in York, it also helps you as an individual to gain an useful insight and experience in special educational needs provisions.

The committee are more than willing to help and listen to any questions about your studies. We are also happy to have a general chat about university life with you whenever you need.

We are really looking forward for what the 19/20 academic year will bring and cannot wait to meet new and existing members!
