Wednesday 8th February, 1-2 pm, FT/114: Your tutors’ feedback: a user’s guide

Just got your feedback and wondering how to do better next time? This workshop will discuss tutors’ typical comments and how to act on them, such as ‘writing more academically’, and ‘being less descriptive and more critical’. There will be opportunities to discuss your own feedback, and a librarian will be on hand to address referencing issues.


Wednesday 22nd February, 1-2pm, HG/136: Active reading, note-making, quoting and paraphrasing

Academic reading can be very challenging. In this session you will learn some simple active learning strategies for responding to difficult readings. It will cover:

  • Purposeful reading methods
  • Making notes for different purposes
  • Ways of citing the work of others in your assignments

Bring along an academic text that you have to read; it could be a journal article, or a chapter from a book on your recommended reading list.


Wednesday 1st March, 1-2:30pm, QE/106: Writing up your research project

You’ve completed your research and now you need to get on with writing it. This workshop will help you to start writing and:

  • Develop an argument/write critically
  • Structure your report/dissertation

Thursday 9th March, 2-3pm, HG/139: Perfect presentations

Dreading presentations? This session will help you structure your talk, select visual aids, deal with nerves and use your personality to engage your audience.


Wednesday 15th March, 1-2:30pm, SK/036: Being critical: reading, thinking and writing critically

Critical thinking is a key element of success at university. By the end of this session you will:

  • Be able to select relevant academic sources
  • Be able to evaluate sources
  • Understand how to move away from descriptive writing and engage critically with sources

Wednesday  22nd March, 2-3pm, SK/036: Reflective writing

This session presents a step-by-step approach to reflective writing and covers several models of reflection suitable for all subjects from healthcare and education to business and the arts.

It teaches students to move from personal descriptive narratives and reflective analyses, to critical conceptualisation of themes, to research and planning for future practice.


Wednesday 29th March, 1-2pm, SK/036: Essay survival kit

In this workshop you will learn how to:

  • Decode essay titles and learning outcomes
  • Plan and structure your assignment
  • Write paragraphs, introductions and conclusions
  • Incorporate evidence without plagiarising

Start at the beginning or bring your title and essay with you.
