Responsibilities of Students

As a tutor, you have defined responsibilities to your tutees. Your tutees will also have responsibilities towards you and the Academic Tuition process.

As a tutor, you should expect your students to:

  • Attend and actively participate in both group and individual tutorials
  • Inform you, via email or telephone, if they are not able to attend a tutorial
  • Respond to your emails (or other communications) in a timely fashion, normally within 3 working days
  • Prepare for individual tutorials and submit any requested information to you in advance
  • Discuss any issues which might affect their academic progress
  • Seek your advice when needed
  • Learn to reflect on their progress
  • Engage with extra-curricular activities

If you find that your students are not living up to these expectations, then you have a responsibility to challenge your students and encourage them to do so in a supportive and motivational way. A response that demonstrates the benefits of engaging, and challenges students to take personal responsibility for living up to these expectations will produce better results than a punitive, authoritarian response.
