Reflection and Action Planning

Reflection and action planning are complex activities that encourage tutees to gain a better understanding of themselves, their skills, competencies, knowledge, and professional practice. Encouraging your tutees to consciously take time to reflect on their learning and development will enable them to develop a questioning attitude, identify areas for change and improvement, recognise and validate effective practice and be actively involved in their professional learning and development.

As a tutor, you should encourage your tutees to reflect on their learning and development, learn from their experiences, and formulate action plans to improve their academic success, personal development, career progression and employability. It is important that your tutees:

  • use feedback from assessments (formative and summative) to identify areas of development.
  • identify any action they need to take including any additional support they require to enable them to improve their academic performance and attainment.
  • articulate and recognise their strengths, areas of difficulty and any barriers to their learning and development.
  • identify experiences they have found useful or enjoyable and anything they wish to do differently in the future
  • articulate their plans and aspirations for the future and identify any barriers to their progression

You should assist your tutees in their development by helping them interpret the feedback they receive from formative and summative assessments, and by regular reviewing their action plans with them.
