Study Development

This is a team specialising in developing students’ study skills. They are not subject specific and are not just for students who are struggling but available for all students who want to improve their study skills and raise their grades.

Aside from 1-1 tutorials the team provide small group tutorials that can often be a better learning activity because they provide the opportunity to also learn from other students. There are a wide range of study skills workshops the team run throughout the year and we would encourage staff to signpost students to these.

We know not all students will engage in workshops so we have a wide range of study skills factsheets on different topics which are available online and you will see on display in Holgate and the Library

The Study Development team also deliver embedded workshops on developing study skills within your course. This is the most effective way to reach students and the content of sessions will be decided upon in conjunction with you. Contact the team for more information.

The team also have expertise in providing specialist tuition to students with a specific learning difficulty (e.g. dyslexia) or who are on the autistic spectrum. This team are an excellent resource for students who might be waiting for their DSA funded individual support.

There are a number of assistive technology programmes on the student desktop which are incredibly useful for students and are not just for students with a disability.

  • Audio Notetaker – Note taking and presentation practice.
  • Read & Write – Proofreading, research, spelling and more
  • MindView – For mind mapping and planning
  • Inspiration – For mind mapping and planning
  • Global AutoCorrect – Automatic spelling correction as you type across all programs

These study skills software is available on campus PCs and can be accessed either through the Start Menu or the software launcher. Please make students aware of these incredible resources and that we have an Assistive Technology Trainer who can help students to learn how to use the software. To book a training session you can come to the Student Information Desk in Holgate or call them on 01904 876477.  Or email assistivetech@yorksj.ac.uk

For writing support delivered by a published author students can access one of two Royal Literary Fellows who offer 1-1 sessions providing advice and guidance on student’s written work. In 2018/19 we have two RLF’s offering three days of 1-1 sessions to students. To book please the Student Information Desk in Holgate, call 01904 876477 or e-mail rlfappointments@yorksj.ac.uk
