Identifying Student Difficulties

Many students will face difficulties at some point during their studies, and their Academic Tutor should be their first port of call. As a tutor, you are expected to provide guidance to students facing difficulties. When this occurs, you should bear in mind that the issue which the student presents to you and the real difficulties facing them may not be the same thing. In some cases, students in difficulty will approach their tutor for help but will not feel confident enough to directly divulge the real cause of their concern, so may raise a different or tangentially-related concern. It takes active listening and your skills and experience to discern what the true issues and concerns may be. You should always give the student full opportunity to discuss their concerns with you, and look for other indicators such as body language, appearance, progress indicators, etc. to diagnose and gently uncover any undeclared issues.
