Common Student Problems

Students suffer from a range of academic, wellbeing and mental health issues, the most common of which are discussed in the following sections. This information is provided as an introduction; for more detailed advice about any of these issues, please contact a professional colleague in the Student Services team.

The number of students who are affected by mental health issues during their studies continues to increase. As an Academic Tutor, you may encounter students coming to you with worries and/or concerns about their mental health or may show signs of suffering from any of the conditions mentioned below. Some people find mental health difficult to talk about and discuss. Only act within the parameters of what you feel comfortable with in any circumstance, and DO NOT put your own safety at risk at any point. If you feel that you cannot deal with a situation as it arises please get support and back-up from your Student Experience Lead, Subject Director, line manager or professional colleagues in the Student Services team.

Please bear in mind that you can only help someone who wants and is willing to accept help. Remember too that, as an Academic Tutor, you are not a qualified mental health practitioner and cannot provide counselling or mental health support to your tutees.
