Exceptional Circumstances

There will invariably by times in a student’s course of study when things do not go according to plan, due to illness, bereavement, family, work, and other commitments. The University offers support to students in these situations through the Exceptional Circumstances process.

If something goes wrong for your tutee, they may approach you for help and guidance in applying for Exceptional circumstances. In other cases, when you are offering advice to students experiencing problems, you may consider it appropriate to recommend that your tutee applies for Exceptional Circumstances.

You should familiarise yourself with the University’s Exceptional Circumstances Process and be prepared to help your students complete an Exceptional Circumstances form.

If you feel unable to advise them appropriately you should refer them to their Subject Director.
