Withdrawal

Some students may begin to withdraw and disengage as learning difficulties arise or workload increases towards the assessment periods. This is typically evidenced by increasing absences from classes and meetings, although this can also be a sign of a mental health issue or an underlying personal issue of the student.

If you suspect that one of your students is starting to withdraw, we advise that you help them within the boundaries of what you feel comfortable with, while also respecting and adhering to the student/staff relationship guidance provided in section 3 of this handbook.

If you receive information from others which raises grounds for concern about the welfare of the student, then you reach out to the student and arrange for them to come and visit you. Alternatively, contact the Wellbeing team and “raise a welfare concern” for the team to intervene with the student instead (https://www.yorksj.ac.uk/student-services/health-and-wellbeing-/worried-about-a-student/).
