Here at YSJ Kitchen we’re working to make our menu as sustainable as ethical as possible

So far we’ve ensured;

  • That all coffee served at our catering outlets is Rainforest Alliance approved.
  • We source Fairtrade Certified hot chocolate and sugar for our outlets
  • We make 80% of our cakes in-house, reducing the need for packaging and ensuring that we know where our ingredients come from.
  • We only use free range eggs in our cooked meals and cakes
  • Ensure we use Red Tractor certified meat and Marine Stewardship Council certified seafood where possible.

We have also started to:

  • Encourage people to bring reusable containers with a 20p takeaway surcharge for disposable food boxes and paper coffee cups
  • Reduce the need for single use plastic bottles by installing free water bottle refilling points.
  • Made York St John branded reusable and 100% recyclable cups available at all catering outlets, with a £1.00 off your first hot drink when you purchase a cup
  • Fight surplus food waste with the ‘Too Good to Go‘ app
The food for life logo
a red background with white cut outs of a fork, plate and knife. on the plate are the words ' Food for life' in red.
The text 'Soil Association' is written underneath in black

We have also achieved the Food For Life Silver School Award certification which works to increase the availability of meals that are seasonal, fresh and locally sourced, encourages organic produce and works with farms, fisheries and suppliers that are local, ethical and meet UK Animal Welfare Standards.
