Today we are celebrating UNESCO International Literacy Day

Literacy is a lot more than just knowing how to read – UNESCO defines it as “the ability to identify, understand, interpret, create, communicate and compute, using printed and written materials associated with varying contexts.” It’s something we all continue to develop in new ways throughout our lives, from school to university and beyond, especially as technology changes and new ways of communicating emerge. Literacy is a fundamental human right, allowing us greater opportunity, personal growth and enjoyment. A culture of literacy celebrates reading and writing not just as a means for critical thinking, but as a means for connection, enrichment and joy.
