Botanical Bookworms, 22 April and 23 April.
Botanical Bookworms is back on the 22nd and 23rd April, from 11am-3pm on the Ground Floor of Fountains. You may have spotted the seedlings growing on the second floor, where they are enjoying lots of natural light. As well as choosing a (free!) plant to take home, you can learn about plant care, pick up a book on a green theme and a recipe card with inspiration for how to use your plant in cooking simple tasty dishes. The event is open to everyone.
Bookmark competition, deadline 30 April.
There is still time to enter our bookmark competition, which closes at 12pm on the 30th April. This is your chance to have your work showcased in the library and across our social channels, and, if you’re a student on a creative course, it can make a great addition to your portfolio (although no artistic experience is required). We’ve already had a range of interesting designs submitted.
Board game night, every Friday.
Our board game nights continue to run every Friday, 5-7pm. It’s a great way to relax at the end of the week, meet some new people and try out our games. We recently ordered several new games for our collection, and you can give these a go before they go out for loan. Check out our video on Instagram for a preview.
York Shakespeare festival, 21 April – 3 May.
21 April- 3 May 2026 is York International Shakespeare Festival, and there are loads of events and performances taking place at YSJ and across York. You can find the programme here. Look out for our upcoming Shakespeare display in the Library, with lots of relaxed non-fiction reads around Shakespeare and his world. We are also doing some work with the YSJ archivist to put some of the York Theatre Royal Shakespeare material out on display, so look out for that appearing in the Library soon.
Calm and Connect Week, 20 April-24 April.
A week of wellbeing activities across campus to help you de-stress and unwind – free yoga and mindful breathing sessions, puzzles, games time, cuddles with our therapy dogs, and much more. Borrow a relaxed read or a book from our wellbeing collection, visit the gratitude wall in the Library and pick up a colouring bookmark.
