My Favourite “Chill Vibes” Locations and Events in York

As a mature postgraduate student, the stereotypical student life of late nights, pound-a-pints, and extroverted social life is well behind me. After four years of studying at York St John University, I have realised I prefer the low energy, chill vibes lifestyle. So, for those who feel the same, these are my favourite locations and events in York to find “chill vibes.”

Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience

This 360-degree art installation is an immersive experience of the life and work of Vincent Van Gogh. Just a 15-minute walk from the university, the exhibit is located in York St Mary’s. For students, tickets are £12 and can be booked the day of, making it a fantastic spot for a solo trip or with a friend. I found the exhibit to be very relaxing and a great place to practice mindfulness. Although I recommend visiting during the week to avoid crowds. You will have a more immersive experience that way!

The Foss Fairy Trail

A beautiful walking trail along the bank of the Foss River decorated with handmade fairy houses. Located just off Heworth Green, the trail is a short 10-minute walk from the university. The trail is free to access and open to the public, making it a great spot for a relaxing nature walk or exploring with friends. I found the trail incredibly whimsical and a darling place for a picnic during the warm seasons. If you decide to visit the trail, please be cautious around the river during the flooding season.

York Terrariums

An independent business offering terrarium building workshops in the local area. They offer public workshops and private workshops at various locations and prices. I recently attended one of their public workshops at the university’s student union. For £7, we were taught how to build our own terrarium using the specialist equipment provided and were shown how to take care of our terrarium at home. A great experience for plant lovers and people looking for a relaxing solo experience or with friends.

Hole in the Wand: Wizard Golf

A magical wizard-themed mini golf experience made up of nine holes. Located in Coppergate Shopping Centre, it’s just a 15-minute walk from the university. Tickets start at £8.29, including access to all nine holes and a yummy potions drink at the end of the course, I highly recommend Basilisk Blood flavour! Other tickets and packages are available online, so you can alter your experience to suit you. There is also a “tavern” on-site offering a range of themed drinks, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic! This is a great location for fantasy fans looking for a cute date spot or a fun day out with friends.
