Tips for attending York Pride

What to expect

The Parade – York Pride Parade usually starts midday at York Minister. The route will run through York City Centre and end at York Racecourse, where the festival will be held. It takes a little over an hour to walk the parade but other forms of transport, i.e. busses, will be available.

The Festival – York Pride Festival is held just outside the city centre at York Racecourse. The festival hosts several attractions including stalls, food trucks, live music, funfair rides and more!

Live Performances – The main attraction at most Pride events is the live performances, York Pride is no exception! York Pride usually has performances from stand-up comedians, drag queens, singers and more!

How to prepare

Medication & Aid – Pride is a daylong event so it’s important to bring any medications or necessary aids with you. For fellow sensory sensitive folk, I recommend bringing some type of noise reduction aid, i.e. earplugs or headphones. Pride, particularly the parade, can be quite loud with cheering, chanting, music, and whistling. So be prepared if, like me, you are sensitive to noise.

Sun Protection – York Pride, like most Prides, usually takes place in June and despite the insistent gloomy weather of British summertime, it’s still important to be prepared for the sun. Remember to wear sun cream, sunglasses and sunhats to provide necessary protection.

Food & Drink – Of course, a range of food and drink will be on offer at the festival, although you are able to bring your own. Bringing a hydrating drink for the parade is essential and if you have any dietary requirements, it might be wise to bring some snacks with you just in case these requirements cannot be met by retailers at the event.

Dress to Express – Pride is a place where people dress their most authentic queer selves. People sport flags, jewellery, make up and clothing that expresses their identity. Of course, this is not a requirement but feel free to have fun with the way you present yourself!

How to get involved

Volunteer – Like most Pride events, York Pride is largely produced by a passionate team of volunteers. This team does so much to ensure we get the best out of Pride. York Pride is always looking for new volunteers, especially on the run up to June. More information on volunteering can be found on their website.

Donate – York Pride is a registered charity so they are open to taking donations. These donations will go towards their annual Pride event. Donations can be made through their website.
