My time at York St John University

I joined the YSJ community as an undergraduate in September 2019. Since then, I have spent 4 years in full-time education, and I will be graduating for the second time in November. During my time here, I have experienced virtually everything York St John, student life, and York has to offer so in this blog I would like to share with you my time at York St John University!

Academic Experience

My university journey started with the BA Photography course. Despite this course providing a lot, I finished my undergraduate feeling unfulfilled due to lost experiences during the COVID lockdown. These setbacks played an important role in my decision to return to YSJ for my postgraduate degree. Primarily, I decided to return to expand my skillset in creative media. The photography course was enlightening but didn’t offer much insight into wider creative mediums. I realised when job hunting, that I would need this insight to pursue my desired career path, driving me towards the MA Media Production course. This course would offer the creative freedom to expand my skillset and explore other areas of media, I could then use this experience to increase my employability.

During my time on these courses, I have built great connections with many of my lecturers. Most on an academic or mentorship level but some on a deeper, more inspiring, level. These lecturers are some of the most creative, supportive, and insightful individuals I have ever had the good fortune of working with. They are fantastic teachers, and even better humans. I continue to reflect on their guidance even now.

Social Life

Social life at York St John University offers something for everyone, from the variety of societies to the events held on campus and beyond. Societies provide opportunities to explore new interests, meet like-minded people, or simply try something different. There’s a broad selection, ranging from sports teams to cultural and creative groups, ensuring there’s always something to get involved in.

Events, both formal and informal, are another highlight of student life. From quizzes and movie nights to student showcases, these moments help create a sense of community and belonging. Whether forming friendships during group work or connecting with others in shared accommodation, the university environment encourages making connections.

For many, the most memorable moments are often the simple ones—spending time with friends, sharing experiences, and supporting each other through the highs and lows of university life.

Living in York

York is a city that offers a balance of history, culture, and student-friendly amenities. Its compact size makes it easy to get around, whether on foot or by bike, while still providing everything students need. The mix of historic landmarks, such as York Minster and the city walls, alongside modern cafes, shops, and entertainment venues, ensures there’s always something to do.

For those looking to relax or explore, York offers green spaces like Rowntree Park and the Museum Gardens, perfect for a quiet break or a stroll with friends. The city also has a vibrant calendar of events, including festivals and markets, that add variety to student life and create opportunities to experience something new.

York’s welcoming atmosphere, combined with its rich history and modern amenities, makes it a unique and enjoyable place to live while studying.

Advice for Prospective Students

  • Take time making friends, there’s plenty of people are out there! Don’t just stick with whoever you meet during fresher’s.
  • Don’t feel pressured to ‘fit in’, the typical ‘student life’ simply isn’t for everyone, and that’s okay!
  • Don’t neglect your studies, your social life will still be there when the assignment is done.
  • Take advantage of the student support services, they’re very helpful and offer amazing resources!
  • Get out and see the city! It may be a small but it’s packed to the brim with opportunity.
  • Manage your finances, it doesn’t go as far as you think it will.
