My teaching and learning experience

My teaching and learning experience as a nursing student at YSJ University

Studying nursing at York St John University (YSJ) has been an incredible journey filled with learning, challenges, and personal growth. From engaging lectures to hands-on clinical practice, my time at YSJ has shaped me into a confident and compassionate future nurse. In this blog, I want to share my experiences with teaching and learning, the support I’ve received, and how my passion for nursing has grown throughout my studies.

Interactive and engaging learning

One of the things I love about studying at YSJ is the interactive and engaging approach to learning. Lectures are not just about sitting and listening—our tutors encourage critical thinking, discussions, and group activities. We explore real-life case studies, which help us apply theoretical knowledge to practical nursing scenarios. The university also integrates modern technology into our learning, using simulated patient scenarios and virtual reality tools to help us develop our clinical skills in a safe and controlled environment. These experiences have been invaluable in preparing me for real-world nursing practice.

Clinical placements: learning on the frontline

One of the most rewarding aspects of my nursing degree has been clinical placements. These placements have given me the opportunity to work alongside experienced nurses in hospitals, GP practices, and community healthcare settings. My first placement was both exciting and nerve-wracking, but the support from my practice mentors and university staff helped me gain confidence. I have learned how to take patient observations, administer medications, and provide compassionate care to people from all walks of life. Each placement has reinforced my passion for nursing and helped me develop essential skills like communication, teamwork, and problem-solving.

Supportive learning environment

At YSJ, the support system for nursing students is exceptional. Our lecturers are always approachable and willing to offer guidance and feedback. The university also provides academic support services, such as study skills workshops, library resources, and one-on-one tutoring.Balancing assignments, placements, and personal life can be overwhelming at times, but the mental health and well-being services at YSJ have been a great source of support. Having access to resources that promote self-care and resilience has helped me stay motivated throughout my course.

Developing as a future nurse

Studying nursing at YSJ has not only given me the knowledge and skills needed for my career but has also helped me grow as an individual. I have developed a strong sense of empathy, professionalism, and adaptability—qualities that are essential in nursing. As I approach the end of my degree, I feel proud of how far I have come. The journey has been challenging yet fulfilling, and I am excited about the opportunities ahead. Whether working in hospitals, general practice, or the community, I know that my education at YSJ has prepared me well for the future.

Final thoughts

My experience as a nursing student at York St John University has been life-changing. The combination of interactive learning, hands-on placements, and continuous support has made my journey both enriching and inspiring. For anyone considering nursing, I would wholeheartedly recommend YSJ as a place that nurtures your growth and helps you become the best version of yourself.
