Favourite places and things to do at YSJ

York St John University holds a special place in my heart, not just for the academic journey it offered but for the vibrant and welcoming campus that became my second home. During my time studying for my BA (Hons) in Korean, TESOL, and Linguistics, I discovered so many hidden gems and spots that made my university experience unforgettable. So let me share with you a few of my favourite places and things to do at YSJ.

1. The Creative Centre – a hub of inspiration

One of my absolute favourite places on campus was the Creative Centre. Whether I was working on a project, attending an event, or simply soaking in the artistic atmosphere, this space always left me feeling inspired. The modern design, quiet study spaces, and regular exhibitions made it the perfect spot to spark creativity.

2. The Quad – nature meets nostalgia

The Quad is the heart of the campus, and its beauty never failed to brighten my day. On sunny days, it was the ideal spot to relax with friends, enjoy lunch, or simply take a break between lectures. It’s a peaceful oasis that lets you escape the hustle and bustle while staying connected to the vibrant campus life around you.

3. De Grey Court – study and socialise

De Grey Court quickly became one of my go-to places for studying and group work. Its bright, airy spaces and convenient location made it the perfect spot to collaborate with classmates. Plus, it’s close to the library if you need to grab a book or find more quiet spaces to focus.

4. The Library – my academic sanctuary

The library wasn’t just a place to study; it became my second home during my degree. Since the Korean classroom and the linguistics lab were located nearby, I spent most of my days here, whether attending classes, working on group projects, or diving deep into research for my dissertation.

My daily routine often began with grabbing a coffee from the shop next to the library and heading to the first floor to settle into one of the computer stations. Once there, I would lock in and work for hours, surrounded by fellow students equally focused on their goals. The library’s energy—a mix of quiet determination and academic collaboration—always motivated me to push through even the most challenging tasks.

The 24/7 access was a lifesaver during dissertation season, and the variety of study spaces meant I could always find the perfect spot, whether I needed silence or a collaborative environment. It’s a place that truly defined my academic journey.

5. The SU Café – coffee, karaoke, and connections

The SU Café wasn’t just about the coffee; it was about the community. From catching up with friends over a quick snack to enjoying a much-needed break between lectures, it was my go-to spot for relaxation.

But the SU Café truly came alive during evenings. Karaoke nights and “pound a pint” events were staples of my university experience. There’s something special about singing your heart out with friends (regardless of talent!) and connecting with people across different courses and backgrounds. These nights were always filled with laughter, camaraderie, and memories that I’ll cherish forever.

6. The Theatre and Drama Society – creativity and community

Although I didn’t attend drama studio performances, I was an active member of the Theatre and Drama Society. Our classes and socials brought a wonderful balance to my academic life, giving me a chance to explore creativity and connect with like-minded people. From workshops to themed socials, this community offered a safe space to express myself and have fun.

7. Evening walks around campus

One of the most underrated things to do on campus is simply taking a walk in the evening. The campus looks magical when it’s lit up, especially during the quieter hours. It’s the perfect time to reflect, clear your head, and appreciate the beauty of York St John.

What I learned from campus life

Beyond these favorite places and activities, what truly made the campus special was the community. York St John University is more than just a place to study; it’s a place to grow, connect, and create memories that last a lifetime.

If you’re new to YSJ or planning to join, I highly recommend exploring every corner of the campus. You might just find your own favourite spots to cherish.
