Accepting my offer at YSJ

When I got my offer from York St John, I was over the moon. I’d applied to a few different universities, but something about YSJ felt right. The way they communicated, the support they offered, and the way they talked about the course. Everything about it felt genuine, which made me confident to accept the offer.

I’m studying law and wanted a solid course that would open up my career opportunities. Additionally, I wanted a place where I’d feel comfortable studying for the next 3 years. YSJ offered both. The course was clearly explained, the modules looked interesting. They provided a well-rounded view of all areas of law, with a good balance between academic work and practical skills. It wasn’t just about passing exams; it felt like they cared about helping students understand what they would be doing. Furthermore, they explained how I could apply these new skills and knowledge.

Location was a big part of the decision. York is the kind of place that’s busy enough to have everything you need, but not so big that it’s overwhelming. The campus is right in the heart of the city, so you feel like part of things straight away. When I visited, it had a great atmosphere that I’d always wanted and dreamed of. Welcoming, relaxed, and easy to picture myself there. Not too small, not too big, everything about it felt comfortable, almost homely.

Once I got my results and my place at YSJ was confirmed, I accepted my offer. I wasn’t nervous, just ready to get started. It was a mix of relief and excitement; relief that I’d made my decision, and excitement about what was coming next.

Now that I’ve started my course, I know I made the right call. The lecturers are approachable, the support is there when you need it, and the whole place has a community feel. You’re not just a number here; you’re treated like an individual, and that makes a big difference.

If you’re still weighing up your options, I’d say think about where you’ll actually enjoy studying, not just the course itself, but the environment too. For me, York St John ticked both boxes. It’s the kind of place that makes the transition to university feel that little bit easier, whoever you are, whatever you do, wherever you’re from. I’m proud to say how happy I am that I followed my gut instinct and accepted my offer from YSJ.

Hi! My name is Grace and I’m a 1st year Law student at York St John. Although I only live down the road in Scarborough, I’m living in York with a student accommodation provider for my first year. I have fallen in love with the city and the university so far, and I am so excited to see what is still to come – I couldn’t imagine being anywhere else! I decided to become a Student Voice Ambassador to show others aspiring to come to university the actual reality of student life, like the amazing rewards of being a YSJ student at such a brilliant university in an amazing city. However, I think it’s also important to show that sometimes life can be tough as a student, especially away from home, but how support is available in abundance from everyone in the university, and how it helps you to empower yourself. Fun fact: I have a huge fascination with bees. It started when I wrote an essay on their importance to the environment in secondary school, and I discovered how amazing the tiny creatures actually were- such a small insect with huge global significance! It’s as if they’re a metaphor for us to – no matter how small we feel in the grand scheme of things, we can do things to make a big difference.
