A student summer
Hi, I’m Tia! I am a first year Human Geography student here at York St John University. As my first year has come to an end I am spending my first student summer here in York. Throughout this blog I want to tell you how a typical student summer looks to me! From working part time with the university to spending time with my friends, there is never a dull moment being a university student here at York St John!
Summer Activities: Where to go!
A summer in York is never boring! There are many activities you can do by yourself or with your friends to keep the summer vibes on track. A few of my favourite are going on a boat ride along the River Ouse, climbing up Clifford’s Tower to watch the sunset, and visiting Pool Bridge farm to cool off with some wild, outdoor swimming (Only a 15 minute drive from the city). Along with this, I also enjoy walking around the city (especially of a summer evening) my favourite walk to do is along the walls to get a great view of York Minster!
Hobbies
One of my favourite hobbies is to read! So you will usually find me tucked away in a café or on a bench in the museum gardens with a good (especially The Hunger Games). I enjoy reading for a variety of reasons, it lets me escape from reality for a few hours. However, my course requires me to do a lot of academic reading alongside my assignments so by reading regularly I’m still keeping up the habit (Even if what I’m reading isn’t quite so Geographical)!
Part Time Job
Summer is the perfect opportunity for me to earn an extra income! As my assignemnts have all been submitted for the last academic semester I have more time to focus on my part-time job. I work as a Student Ambassador here at YSJ (Most universities will offer ambassador schemes) so you will find me on an open day or conducting a campus tour. However recently I have also become a Student Voice Ambassador which allows me to create content for the university in order to help educate current and prosepctive students on what life is like at university.
Summer is also a great time for people to spend time volunteering abroad, or maybe even working on an internship allowing them to obtain work experience in their chosen subject field. Whilst I do like to spend my summer catching up with friends and family, I also like to work too as it keeps me in a routine ready for when I start university again for my second year!
Preparing for the next academic year
Whilst I’m not in any timetabled sessions, I am making the most of my free time to prepare myself for my second year. This doesn’t mean I’m spending hours in the library cramming readings into my head! I personally like to look over my feedback from past assignments to see where I lost marks/what I could improve upon. As a geography student I also like to keep up-to-date with what is occurring in the world so I will spend 20-30 minutes of a morning watching the latest news.
The above, is how I am going to spend my first summer as a student living in York. I will also be visiting home for a very much needed break! Whilst York is an amazing place to come and study it is equally an amazing place to spend your summer too! There is a lot going on so you are able to delve straight into summer activities but at the same time you can also take a more laid back approach too! The summer is yours!
