Exploring YSJ Freshers’ Fair!

Welcome Week | York St John University

Hi, I’m Keira, a second-year Politics and International Relations Student, here at York St John University! I’m here to share my experience of Freshers’ Fair and my tips and tricks for enjoying the day!

First Impressions

When I first arrived at Freshers’ Fair – especially as a first-year student – I found it quite daunting. There were huge crowds and loud noise from both music and people, which was quite overwhelming! However, as soon as I had started to approach various stands (offering lots of free tote bags, of course), I adjusted to the atmosphere and really enjoyed myself! Although it may be daunting at first, the excitement and friendliness radiate from everybody there! I recommend taking breaks (with slices of free Domino’s pizza) so that the buzzing atmosphere doesn’t become too much!

Sports and Societies

When you arrive at Freshers’ Fair, make sure to have a look at all the societies on offer here at YSJ! Societies are a great way to meet new people and make new friends! All sports societies are based in temple hall and offer both competitive and non-competitive sports! Our sports societies include: football, volleyball, cheerleading, and rowing, just to name a few. If sport isn’t your thing, then there are many other societies on offer too, and these can be found in the Creative Centre! From Debating to Zumba, there’s something for everybody!

Freebies and Fun!

There are so many freebies available at Freshers’ Fair, from free Domino’s pizza to tote bags! This year, my favourite freebies were Domino’s pizza and an Adobe Express crossbody bag with pin badges! But there was also free hot chocolate from Chocolate and Co. and free matcha and brownies from The Savvy Baker. So make sure to come down to Freshers’ Fair to explore the freebies!

Advice and Tips

Remember, although the freshers’ fair is a great event with lots to get stuck into, it can also be a little overwhelming. My advice is to attend during ‘Quiet Hour’ from 9am-10am, as the best freebies are available at this time and the crowds and queues aren’t very big! Finally, Quiet Cafe in the Chapel is a great way to escape the crowds! With free coffee and tea with cakes, it’s a great way to decompress from the busy environment of Freshers’ Fair.

Enjoy the fair!
