Attending an Open Day at YSJ!
Hi I’m Keira a second year student studying Politics and International Relations here at York St John University and I’m sharing my tips and tricks on getting the most out of a YSJ Open Day! We have open days on Saturday 18th October 2025 and Saturday 15th November 2025 so make sure to book your place!
Open Day Overview!
Open days are a great opportunity to visit universities you’re thinking about applying to! Here at YSJ, not only do you get to explore campus and accommodation options, but there are also subject talks and the opportunity to speak with Student Ambassadors who know and the uni inside-out! Fully explore YSJ to get a feel for the university before you apply as uni should feel like a home away from home! But remember to take breaks from exploring, so as to not get overwhelmed as it’s a very busy day out!
Getting Involved in!
From campus tours to subject talks and student support and free tote bags (of course!) there’s so much to get involved in on an open day! I’d recommend having a look at the Open ay Event Guide released on the YSJ website before each open day. This way, you can customise your day – this worked the best for me! Most events at open day, like the Study Abroad and Disability teams have drop-in sessions throughout the day, while events like Personal Statement Advice also have talks at different times so make sure to look through all that’s on offer at a YSJ Open Day!
Highlights!
My top ‘must-see’ places on campus are the Student Union and the Library! Both have great facilities, like cafés (with amazing coffee and sweet treats), study spaces and are very cosy and inviting! Make sure to explore the wide range of societies and events on offer at the Student Union! I loved wandering around campus and exploring all the beautiful buildings – especially Quad – because it felt like I was in a fairytale! For me, I knew after visiting YSJ for the first time that this would be my home for the next 3 years! There was a friendly and welcoming atmosphere from the moment I first stepped on to campus that instantly felt like home! So, definitely aim to visit for an Open Day so that you can get a feeling for YSJ from your perspective!
Tips and Tricks!
Open day can be a long day, especially including any travel time, so I’d recommend to wear comfy shoes and bring some water (although we also have free refreshments on campus)! I’d recommend spending as much time as you can on campus to truly get a feel of the YSJ spirit! However, also try to take some time to explore the city of York since loving the area you study in is important too!
